Porto Cristo: How to Get There

Located on the east coast of Mallorca, reaching Porto Cristo is a simple task. If you’re in Palma, you can opt for a comfortable drive that will take you directly to this charming town. Signs and the available Porto Cristo map will make it easy to find your way once you arrive.

Mallorca’s public transportation also allows you to get there via the TIB 401 line.

History and Culture in Porto Cristo

Its origins date back to 1260, when two crew members reached the coast after a rough sea voyage carrying an image of Christ and the Virgin Mary holding the Child. The sailors promised that upon reaching land and finding themselves safe, they would preserve the images of Christ and the Virgin. This curious origin is reflected in the town’s name itself: Porto, from the Latin “porta” (to carry), meaning “to carry”; Christ, referring to the image that landed. The image is currently preserved in the town’s Church of Dolors.
