Chopin in Mallorca: A Musical Journey in Valldemossa

Few figures have left such a deep mark on Mallorca as Frédéric Chopin, and few places preserve it with as much care as Valldemossa, the picturesque village in the Serra de Tramuntana where he lived during a winter that changed his life (and his music) forever.

Did you know that one of the most famous composers in the world composed part of his work in an old monastery in Mallorca? If you are a lover of music, history or simply like to discover places with soul, read on: this journey through Chopin’ s legacy in Valldemossa will thrill you.

Where did Chopin live in Mallorca?

A winter on the island with George Sand

At the end of 1838, Chopin and the French writer George Sand decided to settle in Mallorca to escape the cold and bustle of Paris. What they were looking for was rest, inspiration and a mild climate to improve the health of the composer, affected by tuberculosis.

After a brief stay in Palma, they moved to Valldemossa, the village in Mallorca where Chopin lived, renting a cell in the former Carthusian monastery, today known as the Carthusian monastery of Valldemossa.

“The sky is so blue that it seems it has never cried
George Sand, A Winter in Majorca.

A cell converted into a museum

Cell number 4 of the monastery is today the heart of the Chopin museum in Mallorca, and one of the most visited places in town. This is where he composed several masterpieces, such as some of the Preludes Op. 28, while George Sand wrote her most famous book inspired by the island.

What can be seen in Chopin’s house in Valldemossa?

  • The Pleyel piano he ordered from Paris (and which arrived late, a logistical drama!).
  • Letters, sheet music and personal items of the couple.
  • A small concert hall where piano recitals are held with works by the composer.
  • The original setting: a sober cell, overlooking the olive groves and the inspiring silence of the mountain.

A living tribute

Chopin in Valldemossa is much more than a past history. The town has known how to preserve and celebrate his legacy. Not only in the museum, but in squares, sculptures, commemorative plaques and in the hearts of its people. Here, classical music and history blend with everyday life.

International Chopin Festival

Every summer, in the gardens of the monastery, the prestigious Chopin Festival of Valldemossa is held, where pianists from all over the world perform their music under the stars. An essential cultural plan if you visit Mallorca during the summer season.

Promenade and sculptures with history

Right next to the Charterhouse is a garden with busts of Chopin and George Sand, surrounded by cypress trees, stone benches and literary quotations. It is a perfect place to rest and soak up the atmosphere that so inspired the composer.
