ToggleDinosaur TV Shows of the '90s: A Trip Down Nostalgia
For many, the ’90s were the golden age of dinosaur TV shows, and it’s no wonder. There are many beloved series that had a profound impact on audiences at the time and left behind memorable characters that have remained etched in our memories, becoming a cultural phenomenon.
1.
Dinosaurs (1991)
This is undoubtedly the most iconic dinosaur series of the 90s, an animated sitcom centered around the Sinclair family, a group of Cretaceous dinosaurs. With dry humor and unforgettable characters like Earl, the grumpy father of the family, Rex, the clumsy teenage son, and Baby Sinclair, the baby dinosaur whose famous phrase “Not you, mommy,” Dinosaurs, in addition to entertaining audiences of all ages, also addressed social issues in an intelligent and satirical way.
2.
Denver: The Last Dinosaur (1988)
Although it premiered in the United States in 1988, it arrived in Spain somewhat later. It tells the adventures of a group of young people who find a dinosaur egg and take care of it. Denver learns all sorts of things from them, while they try to keep him away from Morton Fizzback, a concert promoter who wants to take advantage of Denver.
3.
Walking with Dinosaurs (1999)
A BBC documentary series narrated by David Attenborough that, using CGI technology, managed to recreate the world of dinosaurs, bringing us up close and personal with them in spectacular detail.
4.
The Lost World (1999)
This is an action-adventure miniseries based on the novel of the same name by Arthur Conan Doyle. It tells the adventures of explorer Challenger and his team on a mysterious island inhabited by dinosaurs, where they must face a dangerous T-Rex and cunning Velociraptors.
Dinosaur Series Today
Beyond the 1990s, dinosaurs have continued to attract audiences. Today, with increasingly impressive special effects, dinosaur series continue to have a loyal following.
1.
Dinosaur Train (2009)
Dinosaur Train is a cartoon series about dinosaurs designed for the little ones in the house. It’s an educational series about a little T-Rex named Bruno, who has been adopted by a family of pterodons and explores the world aboard the Dinosaur Train.
2.
Terra Nova (2011)
This is a science fiction series whose plot revolves around a group of people who, unable to live on a devastated Earth, travel back in time to colonize prehistoric times. Jim Shannon, the protagonist, will search for a way to protect his family in this new world, as unknown as it is hostile.
3.
Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous (2020)
This animated series belongs to the Jurassic Park universe. It tells the adventures of a group of teenagers in a dinosaur theme park. Together, they must learn to work as a team to survive in an environment plagued by dangerous dinosaurs.
Both the old and the new dinosaur series are especially appealing because they bring us closer to a fascinating world and invite us to learn a little more about prehistory. They also inspire us to reflect on nature and our place on Earth. They are a journey into the past that sparks our imagination and invites us to learn more about the fantastic living beings that inhabited the Earth before us humans. Each and every one of them has left a legacy that endures in popular culture and has served as inspiration for new generations of writers, artists, filmmakers, and even paleontologists.
