Hiking with Kids: The Best Routes for the Whole Family

Mallorca is known for its idyllic beaches, but it also offers a wide range of options for enjoying nature with the family. The island offers hiking trails for children suitable for all levels.

The Best Hiking Trails for Kids in Mallorca

If you’re planning a hiking trip with children, the island offers countless options. These are some of the best routes for enjoying nature in Mallorca:

Ses Fonts Ufanes Route

Ses Fonts Ufanes is located in central Mallorca and has a total length of 6 kilometers (round trip). The difficulty is easy, so it can be done with children or those with limited physical fitness. The trail is well marked and suitable for bicycles.

The route is most impressive in spring, when you can see the seasonal springs of Ses Fonts Ufanes at their full potential. The path is surrounded by forests and nature, with rest stops where you can rest halfway through.

Cala Torta Route

The Cala Torta route is located in the northeast of Mallorca and is 5 kilometers long (round trip). The distance is ideal for this hike with children, although the incline makes it moderately difficult.

Cala Torta combines forest with cliffs, hidden coves, and crystal-clear water. The area is one of the places from which you can see the best views of the Mediterranean.

The trail is well marked, although it is not suitable for bicycles due to the rocky terrain. After completing the Cala Torta route, you can take a dip at one of the beaches surrounded by cliffs.

Sierra de Tramontana Route

The Sierra de Tramontana are located in the west of Mallorca and offer hiking and cycling routes adapted to all levels and preferences. This area has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site and boasts mountain villages, nature, and one of the best panoramic views of the island.

The length and difficulty of the Serra de Tramontana trails vary:

  • Es Caragolí Circular Route: 12.2 kilometers and a 500-meter elevation gain. Moderate difficulty.
  • Cala Bóquer Circular Route via Portell de Sementer: 5.13 kilometers and a 160-meter elevation gain. Easy difficulty.
  • Puig de Galatzó Circular Route: 10.3 kilometers and a 680-meter elevation gain. Moderate difficulty.
  • Cap Gros and La Muleta Refuge Circular Route: 6.10 kilometers and a 160-meter elevation gain. Moderate difficulty.
  • Circular Route from Lluc to the Cúber Reservoir and Phantastischer Ausblickspunkt: 11.7 kilometers and a 320-meter elevation gain. Moderate difficulty.

Betlem Hermitage Route

The Betlem Hermitage Route is located in northeast Mallorca and is 7 kilometers long (round trip). The path is not too challenging for children who are used to walking, although it is moderately difficult.

This route passes by an old hermitage and offers panoramic views of the Bay of Alcudia. The path crosses several fields and enters the undergrowth of a forest. The trail is suitable for bicycles, although some sections are somewhat incline.

Sa Dragonera Route

The island of Sa Dragonera is one of the most biodiverse areas in the Balearic Islands. This area is home to native birds, reptiles, and plants, so it is worth taking some of the hiking trails. The trails are well marked, but are not suitable for bicycles due to the rocky terrain.

The length and difficulty of the Sa Dragonera Route vary: those who follow the route can choose from several forks to complete the circular route. The hike has a total duration of 2 hours and 45 minutes and is of medium difficulty.

Recommendations for hiking with children

When hiking with children, you should keep a few things in mind: choose short, easy routes that are as tailored as possible to their preferences and plan rest stops. Younger children can get bored easily, so adults can create games or activities to entertain them during the hike.

Don’t forget to wear appropriate clothing and footwear, sunscreen, insect repellent, and some food. Always follow the safety recommendations posted on signs along the trail, especially when hiking with children.
